Professional Beauty launches ‘SOS Campaign’26 July 2017In the run-up to the Professional Beauty Johannesburg Expo, which takes place from 3 to 4 September at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, the show’s organiser, T.E. Trade Events, has launched the ‘SOS (Save Our Salons & Spas) Campaign’.Says Phil Woods, commercial director of T.E. Trade Events: “We always like to have a theme for our Professional Beauty Exhibitions, such as ‘The Business of Beauty’, for example. However, this year we are aware of the extreme challenges that the beauty industry is experiencing due to the economy. This is having a terrible impact on salons and spas, and we’ve seen some either closing down or having to retrench staff. “With this in mind, we thought we should refocus the exhibition on the problems within the industry and find solutions to them. The first part of this initiative has been to arrange a series of seminar programmes, to be hosted at the Professional Beauty Johannesburg Expo, to provide useful advice and share knowledge with delegates to help them learn new skills to stay in business. These range from improved marketing and finance, to honing your skills with treatments and innovation.”Woods believes that the more knowledge and improved skills a salon, spa and staff have, the better the service they will give to their clients, thus retaining more business and surviving these tough times.“We are also looking at other initiatives, such as better press links to raise the profile of the industry, and we hope to announce details of this in the near future. In addition, we have also developed a low cost, but comprehensive insurance scheme for salons and spas. Many salons don’t realise that they are not properly covered for any problems that may arise when treatments go wrong. However, if they are covered, the cost is often far higher than it needs to be. This insurance scheme is offered at a very competitive rate and should help those in business to save a little money,” he concludes.
